Sterling Alexander Martin Wood was born on March 17, 1823, in Florence, Alabama. Educated by Jesuits, he was graduated from St. Joseph& 39;s College in Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1841. Wood studied law, then worked as an attorney in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, later establishing a practice in Florence, Alabama.
On November 2, 1917, Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour writes an important letter to Britain’s most illustrious Jewish citizen, Baron Lionel Walter Rothschild, expressing the British government’s support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The letter would eventually become known as the Balfour Declaration.

Thomas Paine Writes Common Sense 1776& 34;Common Sense,& 34; published in January, argued that the time had come to sever colonial ties with England; and that it was in the American interest to do so. This pamphlet sold 120,000 copies in the first three months and was instrumental in convincing many colonists that the time had come for Independence.
